Beodeunamujip, Hanam — charcoal, grilled eel and a whole-chicken soup by the Han River in 17 seconds
Beodeunamujip is an eel restaurant in Baealmi-dong, Hanam, on the Paldang stretch of the Han River just east of Seoul. On the evening of 27 September 2026 the editor ate charcoal-grilled eel served on a hot iron plate, followed by a clear whole-chicken soup with a handful of chives, with a row of small brass-bowl side dishes. The sign lists three things: 1++ eel, free-range chicken soup and 100% buckwheat noodles. Private rooms and a car park; the editor came by car. Visited unannounced and paid in full by an editor who runs four restaurants in Seoul. Prices and hours were not recorded, so none are given here.

Where
78-5 Araetbaealmi-gil, Hanam, Gyeonggi (Baealmi-dong), on the Hanam side of the Han River near Paldang — about 40 minutes by car from Gangnam, no subway nearby. Address from public map listings, checked 30 September 2026. Visited on Sunday 27 September 2026 around dinner time.

What we ordered
Charcoal-grilled eel (jangeo-gui), brought to the table on a hot cast-iron plate over a wooden board, cut with scissors and eaten in short pieces; the sign advertises 1++ grade. Then tojong baeksuk, a whole free-range chicken simmered in a clear broth, finished at the table with a heap of chives. Around ten small side dishes in brass bowls.

What it cost
The editor paid in full but did not photograph the bill or the menu board, so no prices are listed. Ask for the eel price per portion when you sit down — eel is sold by weight or by the fish in most Korean eel houses.

What a restaurant owner notices
Two things an operator notices. First, the banchan were clean — small portions, freshly dressed, no tired leftovers refilled from the day before. Second, the room plan: proper private rooms, a gravel car park in front and a river view at sunset with willows (beodeunamu, the restaurant's name) in the frame. That combination is what a family drive-out restaurant outside Seoul lives on: weekend groups who arrive by car, sit in a room and stay for two courses.

Tip for first-timers
Come by car and before sunset if you want the river light. Order the eel first and let the chicken soup follow — the soup is a whole bird and takes time. If you don't drive, this is a taxi or a friend-with-a-car destination; there is no station within walking distance.

The moment I remember
Red charcoal, ridged eel on black iron, a whole chicken under green chives, brass bowls, and a willow over the river at dusk.
On the day (only on this blog)
Sunday evening, 27 September 2026. A drive out of Gangnam along the river, arriving as the sun went down behind the willows. The car park was gravel and half full; we were shown straight into a room.
Planning your visit
Go by car; there is no station within walking distance. Order the eel first, then the whole-chicken soup if you are three or more. Ask the eel price per portion before ordering — it was not recorded on this visit.
